As women age, the appearance of vaginal issues becomes more and more likely. Dryness, laxity, and other functional problems can become increasingly difficult to deal with without proper treatment. If you’re dissatisfied with the form or function of your vagina, our board-certified gynecologist, Duncan Turner, MD, is here to provide you with the vaginal reconstruction treatments you seek. With over 40 years of experience, Dr. Turner specializes in minimally invasive reconstruction and rejuvenation procedures aimed at improving vaginal appearance and function.
When Is Vaginal Reconstruction Necessary?
Vaginal reconstruction, commonly referred to as vaginoplasty, is a procedure in a growing area of women’s health known as cosmetic gynecology. Cosmetic gynecology is designed to give women greater self-confidence and sexual satisfaction as well as to relieve discomfort in the genital area. Vaginal reconstruction, or vaginoplasty, is a comprehensive surgical procedure meant to tighten vaginal muscles, perineum, and structures of your pelvic floor. As vaginal functions worsen, particularly due to age, childbirth, and trauma, vaginoplasty becomes more necessary. The benefits of this procedure include the reduction of excess perineum tissue and a tighter vaginal opening. These procedures improve both the sexual sensation and the appearance of the vagina.
Vaginal Reconstruction Procedure
A cosmetic gynecology procedure such as vaginal reconstruction is minimally invasive and usually performed as an outpatient procedure. When you come in for your initial consultation, Dr. Turner will work with you to create a custom treatment plan, addressing specific areas of concern based on your health and cosmetic goals. For the procedure, Dr. Turner uses general anesthesia to make sure that the experience is as comfortable and pain-free as possible. A typical vaginal reconstruction procedure lasts from 1-3 hours. This is a no-downtime procedure, meaning that you are free to go home after treatment. If necessary, Dr. Turner will recommend over-the-counter or prescription medications for post-procedural pain relief. He will also provide aftercare instructions to reduce your risk of infection.
Treatment Results
Recovery is largely based on your specific treatment. However, generally, some swelling, bruising, and discomfort may be experienced. While Dr. Turner evaluates the progress of your healing, he may recommend avoiding sex and strenuous exercise for up to eight weeks. While surgery may be needed in some cases, Turner Medical Arts also offers the ThermiVa® radiofrequency treatment.
